You will betray me three times

When Jesus Christ told Peter that he (Peter) was going to deny him three times and say he does not know him, before the crow of the cock, Peter thought it was a joke since he was convinced in his heart that he will never, whatever the circumstances, deny Jesus Christ whom he had truly and loyally served with zest and commitment.

"Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you," Peter declared.

As Jesus was taken up to be crucified, Peter was sitting in the court yard and a servant girl came to him and asked, you also were with Jesus Christ of Galilee, but he denied it saying, I don’t know what you are talking about."

Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there:This man was with Jesus of Nazareth. Peter denied it again with an oath saying I don’t know the man.

After a while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away. Then he began to call down curses on himself and swore to them: I don’t know him. Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken: " Before the rooster crows you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The media has the constitutional obligation to act as watch dogs of society, to hold government accountable to the people and they have been doing just that especially in the crusade to weed out corruption in the public and private sectors. There can be no denial of the fact that the media have been robust in calling for accountability and transparency in the management of Ebola funds. The irony of this robust stance is that the media itself has not been transparent and accountable in the management of Ebola funds given to its professional organization, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists.

At the just concluded annual general meeting of the association in Kenema, three times the question was asked whether the award of a contract to Premier Media Consultancy owned by Dr. Julius Spencer conformed with national procurement laws and three times the President of SLAJ Kelvin Lewis refused to answer the question, much to the dismay of right thinking and sober minded journalists who have espoused the fight against corruption as a crusade.
