Kabs-Kanu is Director of Communications

Usually very reliable State House sources in Freetown have indicated that Wilfred Leroy Kabs-Kanu(photo), editor of the popular Cocorioko online newspaper has been appointed Director of Communications by the APC government.

Kabs(as he is popularly known) will soon leave for Sierra Leone to take up his new appointment after several years in the United States where he has worked as clergyman, educationist and journalist.

In his new role, Kabs will be working closely with the minister of Information, the Permanent Secretary at the Information ministry, the Director of Broadcasting, the Press Secretary and other government officials. He will be the link between State House and the government ministries.

Wilfred Kabs-Kanu holds a Masters Degree in Special Education and has been teaching children with learning, emotional and behavioral challenges.

He has practiced journalism since his teen days at Christ The King’s College ( CKC ), Bo and was very active in journalism at Fourah Bay College where he edited COCORIOKO and SPOTLIGHT between 1972-1975 and also served as the Public Relations Officer of the students’ Union government beteen 1974-1975.

After graduating from college, Kabs worked for THE TABLET newspaper in Freetown in 1977 -1978, before leaving for Liberia where he was Sports Correspondent for WE YONE and continued to work for THE TABLET. He also contributed articles to the Liberian newspapers, DAILY OBSERVER and THE NEW LIBERIAN.

In the United States , he worked as Features Editor of THE WEST AFRICAN JOURNAL between 1995-1998 and EXPO TIMES between 2000-2003 before he set up his own newspaper , COCORIOKO.

As an educationist , he was Principal of the United Muslim Association Secondary School in Freetown in 1975-76.He also taught at the Secondary Technical School at Congo Cross, Freetown from 1976-78 .

In Liberia, Wilfred Leroy Kabs-Kanu served as Curriculum Specialist in 1978-1979 and taught at the Monrovia Central High School and the University of Liberia /World Bank-sponsored In-Service Teacher -Training program from 1985-1990 and was also a lecturer of Educational Psychology at the Kakata Rural Teacher Training College.
