Jasbir Sandhu was elected Member of Parliament in 2011 for Surrey North and is seeking re-election in the reconfigured riding of Surrey Centre ( near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada). He has worked hard to represent the community in Ottawa. As part of Tom Mulcair’s NDP team, Jasbir is ready to keep fighting for hardworking, middle-class families—and fix the damage Stephen Harper has done.

As an MP, Jasbir has advocated for his constituents by bringing attention to the issues facing students, seniors and veterans, and to challenges of the immigration system. He has introduced legislation to restore federal protection for Bear Creek, and to provide funding for successful youth gang prevention programs. Jasbir has also sponsored a motion demanding an official apology for the Komagata Maru tragedy.

In Parliament, Jasbir has served as the NDP’s high-profile critic for Public Safety, and most recently as the Official Opposition critic for Asia Pacific Gateway.

Before entering Parliament, Jasbir worked at the Justice Institute of British Columbia as a program manager for over 15 years. He has also been a small business owner in Surrey. Jasbir was a Board Member of the Vancity Community Foundation, which supports affordable housing and homeless shelters. He has also served as a spokesperson for the Professor Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation and volunteered for the United Way.

Jasbir has also worked as a business analyst, a customs officer, a self-employed building contractor, a truck driver, taxi driver and factory worker. Jasbir is a proud graduate of Queen Elizabeth Secondary in North Surrey. He holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Royal Roads University.

Jasbir has lived in North Surrey for 35 years. He is married to Simi and has two children. A dedicated fighter for hardworking families in Surrey, Jasbir has hosted public forums and informational sessions on affordable living, disability tax credits, affordable housing and parental sponsorships. His office also hosts free annual clinics to help low-income persons file their taxes.
