US Book Launch of “The Freetown Bond: A Life Under Two Flags"

The House of VANyAH is pleased to announce the US Book Launch of
“The Freetown Bond: A Life Under Two Flags,” the memoirs of the Emeritus Professor of English Language and Literature Eldred Durosimi Jones with Marjorie Jones on Saturday, June 28, 2014 from 2 to 6 pm at the Social Hall of the Holy Family Seminary on 401 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904.

The formalities are scheduled from 3 to 4 pm. Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the US, the Honorable Bockari K. Stevens will perform the official launch. Advance autographed copies of “The Freetown Bond” will be available for purchase at $45; at the June 28 event, the memoirs will cost $48.

Professor Jones has had a distinguished professional career as a Lecturer, Professor, Principal and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Fourah Bay College, established in 1827 in Freetown as the first modern university college in Africa south of the Sahara. Fourah Bay College’s reputation gained Freetown the nomenclature: “the Athens of West Africa.” Dr. Jones did his graduate studies at Oxford and extensive research at the Folger Shakespeare Library here in Washington DC, which resulted in his now renowned: “Othello’s Countrymen” and granted him the status of being Africa’s preeminent Shakespeare scholar. He is regarded as the Father of African Literary Criticism.

The event will also officially present the recent publication: “Medicinal Plants and Traditional Medicine in Sierra Leone,” by Professor Cyrus MacFoy, an accomplished academic with experience in Sierra Leone, U.K. and the U.S.A.; former scientific consultant with the UN, World Bank and Commonwealth Secretariat; senior Fulbright Scholar and currently on a Smithsonian Fellowship. Dr. Cyrus MacFoy will also make a presentation and answer questions about his research.

The House of VANyAH’s (HOV) Fine Art and stunning contemporary crafts from sub Saharan Africa and its Diaspora, as well as attractive selections from other vendors, will be showcased and for sale at the event. The HOV was started by a retired US Foreign Service Officer with Sierra Leonean roots, Amelia Fitzjohn Broderick. HOV supports the extraordinary creative talents of women of African descent in order to empower them to better support themselves and educate their families.
