Who is Garry Begg?

26 September 2015 at 10:51 | 1043 views

Throughout his 38-year career as a police officer, Garry Begg worked to build safer neighbourhoods where families can thrive. Now, alongside Tom Mulcair, he’s ready to be our community’s strong voice in Parliament

Garry joined the RCMP in 1976, serving throughout B.C. in many roles—from general duties member to District Commander. When he retired last year, he’d reached the commissioned rank of RCMP Inspector. Many British Columbians will recognize him from television as a media spokesman who has kept them informed about investigations and emergencies.

As a senior leader in the RCMP, Garry learned firsthand what Canadians from many backgrounds expect in terms of public safety. He interacted regularly with all levels of government. And now, with Tom Mulcair, he’s ready to support more effective policing and crime-prevention in our communities.

A dedicated community volunteer, Garry is a recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal and various RCMP awards. He has served on the board of an alcohol and drug agency. In Surrey, he has been an active contributor to the Healthier Communities and Public Safety committees. He is also involved in amateur sports and canvasses each year for the Canadian Cancer Society.

A local resident for nearly two decades, Garry is a proud parent of two, with two grandchildren. His daughter works in Surrey, and his son is an RMCP member stationed in Smithers.
