According to a report from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the two discussed effects of rising global food prices and inflation, particularly for middle-class Canadians and Americans; bolstering energy security; fighting climate change and the utility of border carbon adjustments; and continuing work to advance international tax fairness.

Both the Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary reiterated their countries’ commitment to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s illegal invasion. They also discussed how Canada, the United States, and their allies can continue to assist Ukraine in meeting its financial needs and how to ensure the maximum effectiveness of sanctions against Russia and Belarus.

Deputy Prime Minister Freeland reinforced Canada’s steadfast commitment to working closely with the U.S. and other partners and allies to uphold the rules-based international order. In this regard, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Secretary agreed to continue their collective efforts through multilateral institutions, including the G7, the G20, and the International Monetary Fund.
