The Sierra Leonean community in Winnipeg, Canada, is mourning the death of 19-year old Lahai Conteh (pictured) who was brutally murdered here on Sunday.

Lahai Conteh is the eldest son of Mr. & Mrs. Conteh. Mrs Conteh is better known in the Sierra Leone community as Kankou Mansaray (her maiden name before she got married).

Lahai Conteh was a very quiet person who hardly even talks in public.
The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. early Sunday morning December 21st, 2008 in a lane south of St. Matthews Avenue and Home Street, in the West End of the city.

No one has been arrested so far.

Members of the city’s Liberian community were waiting outside a nearby social hall where they had staged a Christmas party when the trouble started.

After the social, people were already leaving the hall and others were waiting outside for cabs and rides when they heard the shots in the nearby lane.

Some people who attended the social called police to report the incident but most of the people involved in the fracas had fled down the alley before the paramedics came to the scene.

According to the evening local news on TV on Sunday night, Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said there were several reports of shots being fired in the area, but when police arrived on the scene they could not find a body or a victim.

Michalyshen said investigators learned that the person that took Lahai Conteh to hospital was also suffering from gunshot wounds.
