Sierra Leone’s Finance Minister Jacob Jusu Saffa (photo) has secured a 60 megawatts solar project in Busan, South Korea, where he is attending this year’s Africa Development Bank annual general meeting.

Saffa secured the solar energy project from top World Bank officials, reports say.

The new Finance Minister revealed that Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital, has been on expensive and unsustainable emergency power supply for ten years and that the New Direction government of president Bio will provide reliable, cost effective and renewable supply of electricity. At the meeting, the World Bank committed to finance the 60MW solar energy project for Freetown within 18-24 months at very cheap cost.

Compared to the 35 US cent kilowatt per hour Aggreko agreement of the former government, the indicative price of the new solar project will be less than 7 cents, the Minister explained.

A World Bank team has been mandated to visit Sierra Leone within the next few days.
