The Sierra Leone Brewery, commonly known as Sierra Leone Brewery Limited, is the first and only brewery of international standards in the country.

It is not only one of the most viable businesses employing hundreds of workers and providing a livelihood for dozens of farmers, but it’s also a kind of historical institution that has seen governments including military governments, come and go since the country gained independence in 1961.

According to company records, Heineken and United African Company (UAC) began construction of the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited in October 1961 at the Wellington Industrial Estate in Freetown and the first brew was mashed-in on the 23 November 1962. The first brand to be brewed was Star Lager.

Since then the brewery has been servicing the country’s beer needs, closing and re-opening during and after the the economically debilitating civil war.
