Three Sierra Leonean journalists, Martha Karbgo, Sylvia Villa and Silas Gbandia (seen in photo with US Ambassador John Hoover) have won a US embassy Fellowship award in that country.

In May, the U.S. Mission in Sierra Leone offered an opportunity for members of the media to submit story ideas or proposals on climate change, girls’ leadership or press freedom in democratic societies.

The Embassy’s Panel of judges chose stories by eighteen journalists to be awarded a $400 fellowship to develop the pieces. After a month, the Panel chose the three best entries.

Martha Kargbo’s radio story on Press Freedom won first place, Sylvia Villa’s print story on Climate Change was the Second Place winner and Silas Gbandia’s print story on Climate Change was Third Place winner.

Mission Sierra Leone supports opportunities to develop skills and practices of strong journalism.
