The Mayor of Freetown, capital of Sierra Leone, Yvonne Aki-Sawyer (photo), seems to be in hot water as the Anti-Corruption Commission has just released a report accusing her of misappropriating thousands of dollars belonging to the Freetown City Council.
She allegedly set up an illegal delivery unit through which she siphoned council funds via foreign trips, allowances and other payments. She will very likely be charged to court.
Yvonne has always had a difficult working relationship with some members of her own staff and the the Local Government ministry since she was elected in 2018. She has always denied past allegations of corruption and has not yet responded to the latest allegations from the ACC, which has some of the best investigators in the country.
She was probed by Parliament not too long ago. The parliamentary committee investigating her is yet to report to the public.
