Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw, who is former editor of award-winning Expo Times(online since 2000) in the mid 1990s, has been appointed by President Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio as Chairman/Information Commissioner, Right to Access Information Commission(RAIC), in accordance with section 31(1) of the Right to Access Information Act, 2013, subject to the approval of Parliament.
Prior to his appointment, Dr Shaw (pictured) worked as Senior Lecturer in Media and Politics at Northumbria University in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.
He is author of four books, including his ground breaking book ‘Human Rights Journalism: Advances in the Reporting of Humanitarian Interventions(Palgrave-2012). He is also author of over 40 academic journal articles and book chapters. He is co-editor of the forthcoming book by Palgrave-Springer titled ‘Reporting Human Rights, Conflicts, and Peacebuilding: Critical and Global Perspectives (This book is in press and is due out in 2019).
Dr Shaw served as the Secretary General of the International Peace Research Association, a global network of peace researchers, between 2012 and 2016; he organised the very successful IPRA 2016 general conference in Freetown Sierra Leone between November 27- December 2016(attracting over 300 participants from 82 countries) in partnership with the University of Sierra Leone.
Dr Shaw is a graduate of Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone; he also holds an MSc in Development Studies (London Southbank University, UK) and a PhD in Information and Communication from the Sorbonne university in Paris, France.
Dr Seaga Shaw was commissioned by UNESCO to contribute a module on humanitarian journalism to the revised UNESCO journalism Education Model curricula (http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0022/002211/221199E.pdf) launched by the organization’s Director General in July 2013. He served as a commissioner for the Bristol Legacy Commission between 2008 and 2011, representing the African community.
