As expected by many political pundits, the opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) retained the seat that was contested for in the north-west on Saturday while the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party did the same in Kailahun district in the east of the country.

Port Loko district, in which Koya is located, is considered APC territory while Kailahun is seen as SLPP territory.

But the yet unconfirmed (by the national elections body) but reliable results of the two bye-elections show the SLPP making enormous progress in APC territory (Constituency 073) by capturing 40% of the votes while the APC also performed well in Kailahun. The SLPP candidate in Koya is Abdul Karim Kanu.

The APC got over 58% of the votes in Koya thus sending their candidate Issa Oye Kamara to parliament.

The SLPP candidate that won in Kailahun, Hawa Roseline Siafa got 7,567 (83%) votes while her APC opponent Amie Momoh got 1,285 (17%) votes.

Siafa is the new Member of Parliament for that constituency (005). So both parties did well in the territory of their opponent but SLPP seems more optimistic of capturing the Koya seat in the next election.

There was peace and calm in both places and many people commended the electoral commissioner Mohamed Konneh (photo) and police chief Amos Sovula for a job well executed with precision and professionalism.

APC - 1,285 (17%)

SLPP - 7,567 (83%)
