APC publicity secretary William Smith has told the Vanguard today that his party already has over 50% of the votes announced and is likely to form the next government. It needs 55% to be able to do that.

He however did not dismiss the possibility of a run off. "SLPP is hoping and praying for a run off; we, as the opposition, should have been doing that," he said laughing. He is however very positive the PMDC will support the APC if such a scenario occurs. Referring to Charles Margai, he said: "I saw him wearing a red cap today".

He affirmed that the APC has swept all the seats in the Western Area and the north and has done fairly well in the other regions but he cautiously noted that results are still coming in and that the National Electoral Commission is yet to announce any results. NEC has promised to do that later in the week although it is rumoured that it will release preliminary results Monday evening.

The current results circulating in and outside the country were released by independent radio stations in the country led by the BBC-affiliated Independent Radio Network. Sources say only about 10% of the results have been released anyway.

Victor Reider, the SLPP publicity secretary, for his part, says a run-off is very likely, according to reports he has been receiving. Asked whether the PMDC will pitch their tent within SLPP ranks in case of a run-off, he predicted that even if PMDC leader Charles Margai declares for the APC, his supporters, who are mainly former SLPP supporters, will not follow him. He stressed that people should wait for the NEC announcement and stop making wild statements.
