The new Education minister in France, Pap Ndiaye (photo), has a Senegalese father and a French mother.

This might seem normal to a lot of people but it is a groundbreaking and even shocking appointment in France. It is perhaps a thank you note for the massive support President Macron received from black people and immigrants generally in the recent election and the one before that.

The Ndiaye appointment has also generated a lot of hate from the French far right as expected.

There are a lot of inequalities between white and racialised people in France and Macron seems eager to do something about it by appointing a person of colour to head one of the most important ministries in the country.

Ndiaye, whose mother was a schoolteacher, is a historian specialising in minorities in the United States of America, a country in which he lived and worked for some time. He was heading a world famous museum in France before his appointment. He is the brother of Senegalese-French writer Marie Ndiaye.
