Sierra Leoneans in Kenya have set up a football club for the country’s citizens resident in Kenya.
The aim of setting up this Sierra Leone community football club in Kenya according to the Club Chairperson Foday Sesay is to bring fellow citizens together with unity in sports and to enhance physical fitness for its members.
Kargbo explained to our reporter that the training which is scheduled for every Saturday at Langata Karen has garnered support from many Sierra Leoneans including expatriates, students and others from all walks of life in Kenya through their participation and moral support.
"It was interesting to see even the older men participating in the training exercises though they can’t afford to play for a longer time but…it’s good to see us doing the thing in the spirit of oneness," he added.
The chairman further disclosed that apart from some members of the older generation in the team the SLCFC also has young Sierra Leonean players mostly students drawn from various universities and NGOs.
Kargbo maintained that plans are underway to organize international friendly matches with other nationals in Kenya which will be marked as part of the activities for the Sierra Leone Independence Day Celebration in Kenya. This friendly encounter, he said, will be between two other countries celebrating their independence the same day with Sierra Leone that is South Africa and Togo.

The chairman stressed that since the Independence Day will fall on a week day, the celebrations in Kenya will be observed on the 1st May noting that it is proposed to be the first of its kind in this part of Africa.
During the course of the week (27th April) he proposed that compatriots will wear T. Shirts that will depict the message of independence in their various organizations, institutions and place of work.
Kargbo appealed to and extended an invitation to fellow Sierra Leoneans working and residing in other parts of East Africa to come and join them in this celebration to make this occasion successful. This celebration, he re-echoed, is purely sponsored by patriotic compatriots and "has no political undertones that will separate us from achieving our objective of togetherness."
This is the first initiative ever in this part of Africa to mark Sierra Leone’s Independence Day celebration.
