Gullah Greetings and Invitation

24 August 2006 at 12:48 | 982 views

Greetings Sierra Leoneans, Gullahs, DNA-Sierra Leoneans, and friends of Sierra Leone:

For 23 years Penn Center has been hosting the Heritage Days Festival and every year there has been a special theme. This year it happens to be that the subject matter centers on the Gullah-Sierra Leone connection and the symposium on Friday November 10, 2006 at 8 a.m. is going to be based on Priscilla’s Home-Coming. Priscilla is the name given to a 10-year old girl believed to have taken from Sierra Leone and sold into slavery in June of 1756. Historians have been able to trace an unbroken chain of evidence to a now 33-year old South Carolina schoolteacher, Thomalind Polite. You will get to meet Thomalind and her husband Antawn, up-close in a couple of events.

As you will find in the survey (attached), we have posted the events we will attend. We would like for Sierra Leoneans to please join us at these suggested events. Also, please see attached agenda for details and other events:

Symposium - Theme is Priscilla’s Homecoming (St. Helena Elementary School Museum) Friday Nov. 10, 2006 - 9:00 AM-12: 30 PM / Adults $25 / Students $15

Old Fashion Craft Fair - A collection of various events all day long
Saturday Nov. 11, 2006 - 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

(IMPORTANT! Visitors should be in place by 8:00 am to avoid traffic delays )

However, you are still free to attend whatever event you may choose to.

So it is a special year for Sierra Leone and Sierra Leoneans! And it is with that understanding that the Sierra Leone-Gullah Heritage Association is urging Sierra Leoneans to show support for this one-time SPECIAL event.

Well, the planning has begun and we would appreciate it if you can fill out this attached survey so we can better plan from a logistics standpoint. We will continue to provide information periodically as we approach the event.

Send your completed survey via email to sierraleone_gullahconnection@yahoo.com and we will send you regular updates as they become available.

Sincerely,

Akindele Decker
