It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Zainab Fergusson (pictured), popularly known in the community as "Aunty Zain," a long-time community activist within the Sierra Leonean community in Winnipeg. She is one of the founding members of Sierra Ambassadors of Manitoba (SAM -The Golden Conclave).Our thoughts are with the family and friends.
One would describe her as a decent, respectful, hard working, helpful and honest individual. At the Sierra Ambassadors scholarship fund raising reception held on March 29, 2009, Aunty Zain named those values as attributes as what she had prized most.
Aunty Zain worked at the St Boniface General Hospital for more than 17 years. In October 05, 2008, The St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg awarded Aunty Zain the 2008 “Award of excellence and long-term service recognition” for her hard work and dedication.
She exemplified everything that a healthcare provider stands for. She demonstrated a personal and strong commitment to better health services with exceptional performance.
As a founding member of Sierra Ambassadors of Manitoba, she made a difference in both her work and the community. She would be greatly missed by members of Sierra Ambassador of Manitoba (SAM) a.k.a The Golden Conclave and the Sierra Leonean Community in general.
Aunty Zain, with a deep sigh and a warm smile, our beloved aunty, mother, sister and friend left us to remember her. On the evening of Saturday, February 06, 2010 after a brave fight with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by her loved ones she passed away peacefully.
She had a true passion for life. She enjoyed each day for all it had to offer and learned to live each day as if it were her last. Her belief in the joy of life spread to her family, friends, community and her work, where she treated people with openess, fairness and respect.
Aunty Zain left an impression on everyone she met, and will be missed dearly by all the Members of Sierra Ambassadors of Manitoba (The Golden Conclave).
The family wish to thank the many earth bound angels that helped her through her final journey.
Memories of her live on forever. We love you Aunty Zain.
