Football is no doubt the biggest team sport in Africa where the continental body, Confederation Africain de Football (CAF) regulates the game as it is played in various international contests.

This year CAF, which is based in Cairo, Egypt, marks its golden jubilee. Instead of CAF getting 50 candles for its fifty years in existence, her sister federation, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has gift-wrapped 81,000 soccer balls “ for young Africans,” according to

“The balls are being manufactured in Africa, using local materials and will be distributed to schools in all African countries( within the CAF zone).” It is not clear whether the balls are all the standard prescribed by the global body, FIFA.

According to the UEFA site, each national (FA) association will receive 1,000 to 2,000 soccer balls, depending on the size of the country. Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Sudan are to be the initial beneficiaries of this unprecedented birthday gift package.
