Calm has returned to Lumpa Village in Waterloo after a clash between police and students in which the cops were chased and the police post burnt down.

The incident started when traffic cops who were chasing an unlicensed commercial motor bike rider attempted to enter the campus of the Peninsular Secondary School where the students barred them. A confrontation ensued during which the students were alleged to have rained invectives on the cops.

The cops were also alleged to forcibly enter the campus to arrest the motor bike rider which enraged the students and consequently a riot ensued.

The students were alleged to have subsequently gone to the police post and chase out the cops and burn down the building. Some cops were reported to have abandoned their caps as they ran away.

The traffic management unit in Waterloo had embarked on arresting all unlicensed motorbike riders commonly known as “Okada boys” in the township. Many were arrested and charged to court. It was during this exercise that the clash between the students and the police ensued. Some Okada boys allege that the monies extorted from them were left behind by the cops as they made their escape.
