20 October 2014 at 20:10 | 1627 views

The launching ceremony of Painful Journey: A Story of Escape and Survival, by Liberian-Canadian BC resident Jerry Gbardy will take place on Saturday November 1, 2014 at the UNIFOR Building, 326 12th Street, in New Westminster, British Columbia from 5pm to 9pm.

Painful Journey is about the traumatic experiences of Jerry, his family, relatives and other Liberians as they escaped from the brutal carnage of the Liberian civil war and crossed over to neighbouring Sierra Leone where horrible experiences awaited them as Sierra Leone itself became another war zone. The book is also about the power of the human spirit to overcome danger and hardship as Jerry, his loved ones and compatriots navigated their way through killing fields and eventual relocation to safety in Canada. Jerry provided more details about the book in a recent interview with this newspaper.

The book is being sold for $30 (hardcover) and $25 (paperback). A small but significant portion of the proceeds from the book sales will be donated to the Stop Ebola Now campaign spearheaded by the Universal Outreach Foundation, a Vancouver-based charity which has been operating in Liberia for almost a decade now. It is raising funds to purchase critically needed equipment for Ebola-affected areas in Liberia.
