The African Women of Love Ministry, a non-profit organization of Sierra Leonean Women based in New Jersey, held its third annual fundraising dinner and dance last Saturday, October 10, 2009, at the Pine Grove Firehouse, Somerset, New Jersey. Proceeds from the event will go toward the shipment of a 40ft. container filled with medical supplies, food, used clothing and building materials for the completion of a multi-purpose center in Freetown.

Geared toward ameliorating the plight of countless Sierra Leoneans in dire need, the organization was officially launched in Sierra Leone about three years ago to help in the areas of health, education and job-training.

“The main focus of our organization is Evangelism, Health care and Education,” Virtue Bangura, a member of the board of directors, who has been playing a pivotal role since the inception of the organization, explained.

This year’s fundraising dinner and dance featured an opening invocation by Pastor Olutayo Agunbiade, a background of Sierra Leone by Dr. Kai Mbriwa, and a Keynote Speaker, Dr. Mary Grant.

Speaking on the theme, “Novel Influenza: A H1N1,” Dr. Grant talked about how to prevent the spread of the swine flu virus by taking the vaccine. “This is quite an enlightening evening,” says a resident of New Brunswick after listening to Dr. Grant’s in-depth examination of who should take the vaccine.

Mrs. Emily Sawyer was master of ceremonies at the gala event, while Dr. Victor Fakonda gave the vote of thanks. Aside from the superb music - including music from the 70s and 80s- provided by DJ William Koroma, backed by the incomparable Dul and Dula, the guests were provided with free drinks and free food.
