Update on the Bundesliga

The German Football League, the "Bundesliga", is on it’s final spurt. And it is exciting like never before. With only three games to play, there are no less than four teams that are still looking forward to hold the championship shield in the end.

The biggest surprise in this year’s competition is without a doubt VfL Wolfsburg. After half of the games had been played, the team was where it used to be: not in a top position, but also not in danger of being relegated. They were in 9th place after 17 games. But with the beginning of 2009 the club started a sensational comeback.

In 13 games, they only lost once and won 11 times - including a 10 games winning run. The person responsible for this development is first and foremost Felix Magath. The former german international, who led Bayern Munich as coach to two doubles - championship and German cup - in 2005 and 2006, is not only coach, but also manager and chief executive of the Northern-German club. He formed a team that has a solid defence and an unbelievably efficient offense. Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko and the Brazilian Grafite scored no less than 43 goals so far. A fact that mostly Dzeko’s fellow countryman Zvjezdan Misimovic is responsible for.

The midfield schemer scored six times himself and has 18 assists on his scoreboard, the best requirements to win the title. But last weekend was not Wolfsburg’s weekend. Magath’s team lost 1:4 against VfB Stuttgart, which now is only two points behind. Worse still for Wolfsburg were the successes of record champion Munich and the German capital’s team Hertha BSC Berlin. While Berlin is one point behind the top position, Wolfsburg’s difference to Munich is only two goals. Now it is time for the "Wolves" to show, if they are ready for the title.

More on the Bundesliga soon. Stay tuned.
