The United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL), in collaboration with the civil society women advocacy group, 50/50, is supporting national artists in the organization of a sensitization concert aimed at promoting the participation and involvement of women in the forthcoming elections in Sierra Leone, scheduled to take place on 11 August 2007.

The planned musical event, under the slogan “Salone women on the wheel: Road to Equality”, will take place at the National Stadium in Freetown on 30 June, targeting a selected audience ranging from members of political parties to civil society organizations, and the public at large.

The concert will feature local female artists and their male counterparts vibrating the sound system with five new songs encouraging the nomination of women as candidates for elected office as well as their appointment to important decision-making positions in the public service.

The United Nations attaches great importance to the enhancement of women’s participation and the promotion of gender equality as articulated in the Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) and Security Council Resolution 1620 (2005).
