UNIOSIL, in collaboration with UNDP, UNIFEM
and UNICEF will be holding a sensitization workshop to strengthen the capacity of middle career officers in the Republic of Sierra Leone armed Forces(RSLAF) with a view to consolidating peace and security in the country, consistent with resolution 1325 (2000)of the United Nations Security Council.

The workshop which will be held from 30 May to 1 June, is geared towards acquainting middle level personnel of the Armed Forces with human rights principles, and in particular on matters relating to gender based violence, employment, marriage, property and child rights. They will also be familiarized with the mandate and planned activities of the newly established National Human Rights Commission, the rights of civilians as well as the responsibilities of peace keepers in conflict situations.

The three day training of trainers programme is geared towards empowering the officers so that they may acquire reasonable knowledge of the key principles of human rights and their role in protecting and promoting these rights especially in times of conflict. This will enable them to share the knowledge so acquired with those under their respective command.

The officers will be trained on the basic principles of Human Rights and Human rights law and international standards; military justice, code of conduct and discipline; the role of the military in the sustenance of democracy and peace building in developing countries.

The training will comprise lectures, participatory and inter-active sessions based on experience sharing and case studies brought up by participants. Facilitators will be drawn from the United Nations System, community based organizations and non governmental organizations.
