Sierra Leone: Post-Christmas cabinet reshuffle

A surprise announcement from State House in Freetown on Monday December 28th revealed partial changes in the current cabinet with the promise that more are in the pipeline.

Two big changes in the current political configuration are the appointment of Anti-Corruption Commission boss Joseph Kamara as Attorney General and Minister of Justice. Kamara is replacing Franklyn Bai Kargbo.The other one is the appointment of political new comer Professor Monty Jones (pictured-World Food Prize photo) as Minister of Agriculture. He replaces Dr. Joseph Sam Sesay.

Dr. Jones is an internationally recognized agriculturist and rice researcher who, until this announcement, was working at State House as one of the President’s advisers. The former Agriculture Minister, Dr. Sesay, goes to the Office of the President.

Three new Ministers of State were also appointed. Two to the Foreign Ministry and one to the Finance Ministry.

The two to the Foreign Ministry are Dr. Mohamed Gibril Sesay, a sociologist, poet and Fourah Bay College lecturer (Minister of State 1) and Isata Kabia, a Member of Parliament for one of the Port Loko district constituencies (Minister of State 2).

The third Minister of State is Patrick Saidu Conteh, a banker from the private sector. He goes to the Ministry of Finance.

A new Chief Justice has also been appointed. He is Honourable Justice Hamid Abdulai Charm.

Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad are waiting with bated breath to know what other names will pop up in the next announcement or announcements.
