Freetown is the scene of a riot Saturday
between some youths and the police. Apparently, a taxi cab driver
was pouring a gallon of petrol into his taxi cab tank Saturday afternoon
around Cole Farm,Wilkinson Road, when a policeman approached him and
accused him of stealing the petrol.

The cab driver rejected the
accusation, intimating that he bought the petrol. He was pouring it into his
tank because he had ran out of petrol. The policeman demanded that the driver
should come with him to the station for interogation, but the driver
refused. In the ensuing scuffle, the policeman shot the driver on his leg with a
live bullet.

But the shot triggered an explosion because the driver
was still pouring petrol into his vehicle. As the fire was raging over
the driver, he was able to sprinkle the remaining petrol over the policeman
and then held on to his pants so he could not escape the raging fire
that ensued.

Both driver and cop were severely burnt by the
explosion. It is likely that they may not
live.
This tragedy set off a rampage by the youths who mobilized in groups
and started burning down every polic vehicle around the vicinity. The
riot quickly spread over the entire city and police were firing live
bullets.

Two deaths from gun shot wounds were reported Saturday and
the city remained tense on Sunday.
