Press Release

PBC Country-Specific Chair Commends Sierra Leone for making significant progress towards peace consolidation.

The Chairman of the Peace Building Commission (PBC) Sierra Leone Country Specific Meeting, Ambassador Frank Majoor, has commended Sierra Leone for making tremendous efforts in ensuring sustainable peace in the country, noting that a lot more needs to be done.

Ambassador Frank Majoor was wrapping up a one week working visit to Sierra Leone from 9 to 15 October, during which he engaged the government and other stakeholders on the development of the Peace Building Commission Cooperation Framework, and the post-election peace building challenges.

He held consultations with H.E. President Ernest Bai Kororma and Vice President Sam Sumana; Members of Parliament; the Executive Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Victor Angelo; United Nations Country Team; members of the diplomatic corps; Mano River Union Secretary General; senior government officials and civil society.

Ambassador Majoor assured of the assistance of the Commission in addressing key areas in the peace building process such as the justice sector reform, governance, human rights, security sector reform, youth employment; civil service reform and capacity building, as well as cross cutting issues such as gender empowerment, health, education, energy, water and sanitation and infrastructure, which he underscored as the major challenges for sustaining peace in the country. “In all these the PBC can play a critical role to assist the new Government” the visiting diplomat averred.

Ambassador Majoor commended the Police and the Military for their exemplary role in providing security during the recently held presidential and parliamentary elections, which he described as “a turning point” stating that they need further strengthening to continue to perform their constitutional duties.

The Peace Building Commission is an inter-governmental body to assist Sierra Leone’s development. The PBC dialogues with the Government of Sierra Leone to develop a political framework that highlights key peace building challenges in existing national strategies and commitments and ensuring their timely and effective implementation.
