New UN Theme Group Chair on HIV/AIDS Appointed

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 19 February 2007 --- The Country Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Sierra Leone, Dr. Felicitas R. Zawaira has been appointed the new Chair of the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS in Sierra Leone, succeeding the UNICEF Representative, Mr. Geert Cappelaere who has held the post for the past 14 months.

The UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS is a representation of Country Representatives of UNAIDS co-sponsors and other UN agencies.

The group is the forum which plans, manages and monitors a coordinated United Nations system response and ensures optimal United Nations support to the country response to fight HIV/AIDS.

Other functions of the United Nations Theme Group are to:
advocate political will and commitment to a multi-sectoral, expanded response;
advocate and support national leadership and coordination of the response;
advocate and promote international best practices;
and assist with the mobilization of technical, financial and institutional resources for a scaled up response.

The Chair of the United Nations Theme Group works with the support of the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the UNAIDS Country Coordinator. He/she is selected by the United Nations Country Team and appointed for one (1) year on a rotating basis among Country Representatives of UNAIDS cosponsors.
