The United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) and the Sierra Leone Bar Association are organizing a one-day Consultative Forum to discuss inherent constraints in the country’s legal and justice system. The consultations will be held on 4 December 2007 at the British Council Hall in Freetown, with a view to improving the situation.
Under the theme “The problems facing the Legal and Justice System in Sierra Leone - The Way Forward” the event will bring together major players in the justice sector - Chief Justice, Speaker of Parliament, Inspector General of Police, Prosecutors, Director of Prisons, Lawyers, Judges, Magistrates, Civil Society, and United Nations Agencies.
It has been realized that interventions in the justice sector lack a holistic approach in addressing the challenges and constraints plaguing each institution - such as delayed justice, capacity constraints of judges, magistrates, court officials, prosecutors, police and prison officers.
The Forum would provide an opportunity for diagnosing these and related obstacles and make recommendations for improvement to further develop an effective and accountable justice system in Sierra Leone.
