19 February 2009 at 04:04 | 987 views

Canadians for Obama, the group inspired by US president Barack Hussein Obama, with membership from coast to coast to coast will welcome President Obama to Canada by hosting various events and activities in Ottawa and Vancouver on Thursday February 19, 2009. Canadians for Obama stands for Progressive views, Grassroots organizing and Diverse membership.

According to one of the co-founders of Canadians for Obama, Ajay Puri, “with the elections successfully over we have re-organized our efforts”. He added that “our mission is to make the positive Change Obama has initiated relevant in a practical way”. To keep true to what Obama has called for, a change in how we do politics, he noted “we have identified three main objectives in the area of policy development, political engagement, and community service”:

Policy Development - draft and present policies that protect human rights and deal with Canadian/US relations
Political Engagement - encourage and empower our fellow Canadians to get more actively involved in the political process (whether in a partisan or non-partisan way).
Community Service - organize social and volunteering events for our community to get more connected and engaged within our own communities.

Members of Canadians for Obama, Democrats Abroad, and other admirers of President Obama will be making their way to Ottawa to welcome him, but most will not make it to Ottawa. According to Dr. Clement Apaak, acting Community Service Chair of Canadians for Obama, “many Canadians are disappointed that they will not be able to see and welcome President Obama in person, especially, many on the west coast”. It is for this reason, “that Canadians Canadians for Obama is organizing a historic Call to Service event in New West Minister, BC” he added. The group hopes that starting on the 19th of February 2009, every 19th of each month Canadians for Obama will organize volunteering events to engage fellow Canadians in helping out in their local communities. Dr. Apaak stated that “to kick off our commitment to community service as called for by Obama, our members in the Lower mainland of BC will be assisting the Centre of Integration for African Immigrants (CIAI), a non-profit organization formed to support visible minorities with ethno-cultural barriers, by assisting in the settlement, adjustment, and integration process. According to Paul Mulangu, Director of CIAI“ it is refreshing to see Obama’s ideas helping to effect change we can believe in”.
