Sierra Leone’s presidential spokesman Alpha Kanu(pictured) has explained the
reason for President Ernest Bai Koroma’s recent visits to
Guinea, Liberia and Burkina Faso respectively.

During an interview with journalist David Tam Bayoh on
Radio Citizen 103.7 FM, Alpha Kanu said his visit to
Guinea and Liberia was purely on security matters in a bid to
strengthen the relationship with the two Mano
River Union countries.

"Guinea and Liberia are our next door neighbours and
it is very imperative that the president meet with
their respective leaders to acquaint them of the
current situation back home," Kanu said.

He added that Sierra Leone,
Guinea and Liberia share common borders and
common problems and the visit of President
Koroma could well be a major boost to his presidency,
considering the fact that both countries had played
significant roles towards the security and development
of the country.

On Burkina Faso, Kanu said that country has the
current chairperson of the Economic Community of West
African States (ECOWAS), President Blaise Compaore.

"As Chairman of ECOWAS it is very important that
President Koroma meet him and discus issues of
national and sub regional concerns with him. But
critics of the new government have been quick to blow
the issue out of proportion giving the visit different
interpretation and purposes," Kanu observed.
